What I know so far

I've been in Grand Rapids for a little over a month now and I wanted to share some random thoughts on what I've observed so far.

  1. Michiganders are NICE. I had heard this anecdotally before I moved here, but I can confirm its veracity. We have had lovely encounters with our neighbors and fellow parents; we have left places like the local post office, Target and the Michigan DMV with smiles on our faces; the friendly server at one brewery we went to would have joined us at our table if she could have.

  2. Space matters. We may not be neat-as-a-pin people, but having storage helps. A lot.

  3. I need a routine. I thought that I might be able to motivate myself to exercise on my own, but it turns out that my 12-year-boot-camp habit did not turn me into a morning person. To get me out of bed, accountability is still required. Luckily, I have found a community of runners (see NICE above).

  4. Having seasons is fantastic. However, talk to me again in February.

  5. Michiganders complain about the weather, too. I thought the locals would take cold, rainy weather in stride, but, no, they complain, too.
  6. I LOVE having wood fires. I have already had several fires in each of our two fireplaces, but since our big supply of wood was delivered last weekend, I've had two marathon days of fires where I started a blaze at 9:30am and maintained it until 9 p.m. It makes me so happy to sit in front of a fire all day, especially when it's cold and gray outside.

  7. Michiganders sure like their lawns. I can't let go of my California view of this lawnscape as wasteful and unnecessary. The dogs sure love it though.

  8. Michiganders come to a complete stop at stop signs. Colleen is the one who pointed this out to me. The "California roll" is so named for a reason. Colleen is pleased as punch to be living in a place where traffic rules are obeyed.

  9. Cider slushies are a thing. Yaaas.

  10. Three to five pumpkins stacked on top of each other is a thing. Cool, cool, cool.

  11. Candy corn + peanuts. I don't know that this is a Michigan thing, but I found out about it here, and everyone I mention it to is like, "Well, yeah."

  12. I miss everyone. We're all enjoying our time here, but it doesn't mean we're not missing friends and family. I love having a house that can accommodate guests (see random thought #2), so please come visit.

Are we brave? Or nuts?

In June, one of my closest friends, Jen Clary, and her family, came to visit us in Oakland. Jen lives in Michigan with her husband Mitch and her identical twin girls, who are high school seniors. Jen and I have known each other since college. She lived in Oakland for many years before returning to her home town of Grand Rapids. Enzo had met "the girls" a handful of times before, but on this trip, the three teens had such a good time together that they secretly hatched a plan for Enzo to visit them in Michigan before school started. In late August, Enzo flew to Grand Rapids for a few days--a last hurrah before the beginning of his junior year at Oakland Tech. Colleen told me before he returned, "You know he's going to tell us he wants to move to Grand Rapids when he gets home." I laughed. She was right, of course. And when he actually said it in the car on the way home from the airport, something deep inside of all of us stirred. Yes, we need a change. Yes, ...

The house

One of the reasons we've talked about moving over the years is lack of space. When we go to other peoples' homes in the 'burbs (or anyplace other than the inner East Bay), we swoon over their closets. Not their kitchens (well, okay, sometimes). Not their yards. It's always the closets. Our Oakland home is roughly 1,000 sq feet. It has three closets: a tiny one in Enzo's room, one clothes closet for Colleen and me to share, and one hallway closet with shelves. During the pandemic, the house seemed to shrink. Scratch that, the house has been shrinking since we got Perry. Then Enzo kept getting larger. And then we were just home ALL OF THE TIME during the pandemic. And then we got Joe. Believe me, I know that there are many places in the world where people would be grateful to live in such a cozy home such as ours. But that kind of perspective only gets you so far when you're tripping over a road bike in the living room. If only we had closets to put things,...

The fall

Being a Jersey girl, I have experienced sesaons before. But having been a Californian for the past 25+ years, I had forgotten. Grand Rapids is already putting on quite a seasonal show. It started on the first day of autumn, when -- right on queue -- the temperature plunged. Every day and every turn offers a surprise pop of color. What's more, Michigan is the third leading producer of apples in the U.S., which means fresh-pressed cider is plentiful. And nothing says fall more than cider. I have made it my mission to get to as many cider mills as I can. As a bonus, most cider mills in Michigan also make donuts. Obvi, I'll also be tasting as many freshly made donuts as I can. For my birthday weekend, Colleen and I hit Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery , the place everyone told us to go first. It's only 15 minutes or so from our house. Robinette's was a scene , and we waited in line for a bit to get into the bakery. Fortunately, we're well-acqu...
